Investment Trust Top 20s
Alan Brierley
Director of the Collins Stewart Investment Companies team
Nine of the top twenty stocks offer above average yield or a growth and income policy, which reflects the strong and consistent demand for yield which has been a feature of investment trust demand for over two years. Murray International, Edinburgh Investment Trust, Merchants Trust and Aberdeen Asian Income all satisfy the market demand for income, while offering a range of underlying asset exposures and styles. The other popular trusts illustrate the attractive range of opportunities available in the sector for investors seeking global active management.
Personal Assets, RIT Capital and Ruffer all have a primary focus on capital preservation and these companies are establishing themselves as cornerstone investments within diversified portfolios. Personal Assets Trust has provided a successful, relatively defensive return over the long term, underperforming from 2002 until 2007 and then outperforming strongly since then. Scottish Mortgage has been the leading global fund over the past three years, and has a performance shape broadly inverse to that of Personal Assets. RIT Capital Partners has matched Scottish Mortgage over the long term. Templeton Emerging Markets has given investors exposure to global emerging markets, which has been the key growth story over the past ten years.
